ZEUS Project
Sept 2021 – Feb 2025
The ZEUS project aims to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of a water recycling solution on the site of a MONIN syrup manufacturing plant. This demonstration project is financed by Europe via its LIFE program and co-financed by the Loire-Bretagne, Adour-Garonne and Rhône-Mediterranean-Corsica water agencies.

Project
Objectives
The ZEUS project aims to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of a water recycling solution on the site of the MONIN syrup manufacturing plant in Bourges leading to zero liquid discharge by the separation of 3 streams considering their valorization :
- High quality water compliant with food contact (recycling and reuse in proportions greater than 75%).
- Mineral salts for the regeneration of softener resins.
- Concentrated organic compounds for the production of renewable energy.
Innovation is based on the combination of these techniques carried out in real conditions. This involves demonstrating the technical and economic interest, measuring the environmental impact of the project and enabling the dissemination and duplication of technologies among other manufacturers.
CRITT Bio-Industries
contribution
INSA Toulouse, through its TBI research laboratory and the 2 R&D centers (CRITT Bio-Industries and CRITT GPTE), is in charge of studying the environmental relevance (LCA) and replicability of the solution.
CRITT Bio-Industries is particularly involved in action B7 dedicated to the development of replication tools for REUSE projects in the Agro-Food Industries.
The development of the replication methodology is based on real industrial cases (4 study cases selected in the territory administered by the Loire Bretagne, Rhône Méditerranée Corse and Adour Garonne water agencies).
The mission of CRITT Bio is to carry out membrane filtration tests at different scales and to characterize the performances in terms of process (pretreatment operations, flow, pressure, etc.) and in terms of quality (analyses of the composition of effluents, permeates and retentates).
This approach should make it possible to construct a database and its area of validity, to establish correlations between technological parameters and characteristics of the water to be recycled. These correlations will be used on new cases to be evaluated, they will be updated as well as their field of application.
